Project Transporter: A Monumental Milestone for UBP
The rest of the world witnesses the digital transformation of the banking industry. UnionBank, the country’s Best Digital Bank for three years now, has one of the most sophisticated and secure data centers in the Philippines. As we continuously modernize the backbone of our operations and ensure consistent availability and reliability of our computing platforms, Project Transporter was born.
Project Transporter is a ‘lift and shift’ migration project of UnionBank’s data center from one location to another. It aims to ensure that the whole bank’s computing platform has an advanced operational efficiency to meet and even surpass the demands of the organization’s digital transformation. It also proves that the technology operations team can perform a major data center transfer without interrupting and affecting the quality of service we provide our customers.

The first objective is to ensure that we increase multifold the availability and the reliability of our computing platforms. The second objective is to prove to our technology organization and to our management that we can do a major data center lift and shift without affecting the services that we provide to our customers. We’ve achieved both an this is good because. This now allows us to service our customers with more confidence that no service interruption will happen.

The project is considered a monumental milestone for IT in UnionBank. It was carried out efficiently through careful strategic planning using Six Sigma methodologies, among others. It officially kicked-off in October 2018, with 3 tracks to execute and 3 teams implementing them. All tracks parallel – from planning, purchasing, migration, testing, but the execution is sequential, 1 track to another. The success of the project is also attributed to the partnership with Globe Business, the enterprise arm of Globe.
Project Transporter encountered several unforeseen activities which affected project timelines and performance. But despite those surprises, everyone in the project continued to deliver with our commitment to finish the project. It’s an honor and privilege for me to work with so many individuals who are all at your back with the same objective.

With this development, the whole organization and our stakeholders are assured of a modernized data center, cost and operational efficiency, simplified infrastructure, network resiliency and 24/7 availability of our services to our local and international clients.
