UnionBank recently held its 1st Green Commuting Mixer on August 30, 2024, at the 14th floor of UB Plaza, bringing together employees interested in carpooling as part of the bank’s new sustainability initiative. Led by the Family Welfare Committee, the mixer represents “a small step towards something big” as it seeks to promote sustainable transport options among UnionBankers.
The Green Commuting initiative is closely aligned with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal #3 (Good Health & Wellbeing), Goal #7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal #9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), Goal #11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Goal #13 (Climate Action). By encouraging carpooling, UnionBank is taking significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint. Fewer vehicles on the road means lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced energy consumption, reinforcing the bank’s commitment to sustainability.
The initiative also fosters a sense of community among UnionBankers. By sharing rides, employees have the chance to connect with colleagues they may not typically interact with, building stronger relationships and a greater sense of camaraderie.
During the mixer, topics like the do’s and don’ts of commuting and road safety were discussed. OSHD Safety Officer Alvin, one of the speakers, presented various road accident videos that, while shocking, served as a crucial reminder of the risks on the road and the importance of vigilance, especially for drivers who are responsible for their passengers’ safety.
Afterward, participants were grouped by location to make it easier for them to coordinate routes, schedules, and payments for carpooling. The mixer also offered free donuts and coffee, creating a friendly, social atmosphere alongside the informative discussions.
The Green Commuting Mixer was a successful step in UnionBank’s efforts to champion sustainability. By promoting greener commuting solutions and fostering a sense of community, the initiative highlights the bank’s dedication to environmental stewardship and its commitment to a more sustainable future.
