In celebration of World Mental Health Day, UnionBank has launched a month-long celebration titled “Mindful Moments: A Mental Health and Wellness Celebration.” While mindfulness has always been a core practice at the bank, this event encourages UnionBankers to actively prioritize their inner well-being throughout the entire month and beyond.
The kickoff event took place on October 7 at UnionBank Plaza, featuring an opening ceremony that set the tone for the celebration. During the ceremony, Chief Human Resource Officer Michelle Rubio shared her personal experiences with stress, recalling a time when it led her to forget her iPad on an airplane, which contained important files and information.
Her reflection resonated with many, as she emphasized that stress is a common challenge for employees. “While we encounter stress daily, it’s essential to practice mindfulness and recognize how we can manage it effectively,” she stated. She encouraged everyone to adopt mindfulness practices to cultivate a happier, healthier, and more productive work life.
Following her remarks, the event welcomed Dr. Joan Perez-Rifareal, a licensed psychiatrist and Vice President of the Philippine Psychiatric Association. She delivered an enlightening presentation titled “Calm in Chaos: Managing Anxiety through CBT Techniques.” In her talk, she explored the symptoms and manifestations of anxiety, providing insights on how Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can help individuals reframe their thought patterns.
Dr. Rifareal explained that while anxiety can be a natural response that aids survival, it becomes problematic when it is excessive and hampers daily functioning. “Anxiety is a concern when it becomes overwhelming, disproportionate, and activates your ‘freeze’ response,” she noted. Her insights helped attendees better understand their feelings and learn practical strategies for coping with anxiety.
At the same time, the Self-Care Market was set up on the 10th floor of UnionBank Plaza. It provided a chance for employees to unwind and practice self-care while supporting local businesses.
For two days, UnionBankers were able to avail services and browse items from brands such as Birkenstock, Toy Kingdom, Mayikiss Wellness, Joy in Craft, HealthFirst, and Anytime Fitness.
The Self-Care Market will continue to be available at UnionBank Square from October 9-10, allowing even more employees to shop.
Throughout the month of October, UnionBankers can anticipate more activities aimed at promoting mental health awareness and practicing of self-care. One highlight is the Mindful Moments Film Festival (MMFF), which will showcase films centered on mental health themes, complete with complimentary popcorn for a delightful viewing experience.
Employees will also be able to participate in a Zumba class to enhance physical well-being, and engage in bloodletting activities organized in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross to promote health and community service.
Webinars will be offered on sensitive topics such as the art of forgiveness and insights on self-harm, providing valuable resources for employees navigating these complex issues. Additionally, a learning session on psychological preparation for retirement will help employees transition into this significant life phase with confidence and clarity.
Through “Mindful Moments”, UnionBank actively provides resources, support, and engaging activities to empower employees in their self-care journey, promoting a healthier and more resilient workforce.
