
The Respect Basics

We often hear the saying: ‘You earn respect, not impose it,’ which remains true today.
No matter the situation in your team and organization, one must learn how to stay composed and treat everyone with fairness in times of triumph and even challenges.
Here are some 8 communication etiquettes that will improve camaraderie and respectfulness in your workplace.

1.) Be Punctual
Easier said than done; punctuality is often overlooked and neglected once we developed a bond with our workmates.
TIP: Work on your sleep schedule and remember to approach your day with the same mindset that you have when applying or meeting someone for a job interview.

2.) Manage your temper
Recall the last time you had a war of words with a close friend; it doesn’t feel good, right? Now, imagine expressing your dismay to someone you work with for 5 days a week, who more often than not you’ve developed a bond with over time. We are all a working progress towards improvement, and mistakes are part of our work. Know that we’re all in this together.
TIP: Address the problem calmly and let the person/group express their apologies. Formulate a solution afterward.


4.) Chivalry is not dead!
TIP: Have the courage to step out of your comfort zone. Talk to everyone in your team and even those who are not. When someone approaches you, a simple smile and a comforting ‘how may I help you?’ will surely brighten their mood.

5.) Respect Everyone’s Privacy
TIP: Always think twice before deciding to ask someone about a sensitive topic. Just remember that when your workmate is comfortable sharing it, chances are you don’t have to ask in the first place.

6.) Do not be rude to anyone
Be mindful of your actions and how you address someone. Rudeness can sometimes be taken as arrogance or worse bullying and it is never acceptable. Overfamiliarity can sometimes lead to name-calling and oversharing. Always practice restraint and observe professionalism.
TIP: Be considerate to others even regardless of your work relationship to build or strengthen rapport and gain their trust.

7.) Honor your word
Be honest, especially in the workplace. Whenever you set a deadline, you must finish the task early. It is not only for time-sensitive people but it is also to show respect for other people’s time.
TIP: Don’t let your team or the organization down by assuring them that you will deliver the tasks given to you. At the same time, do not be afraid to tell them that you may need a hand to ensure timely delivery.

8.) Go the extra mile and do your best
You were chosen to be in that position because you are the most suited for the job. And everyday is an opportunity to strive better and achieve more. Work hard on being the best in what you do while uplifting others and improving everyone’s working experience.
TIP: It’s alright to be competitive for it drives you and keeps you motivated, but also acknowledge that life is not a race, and we all work for a common goal: success.
