Student Mentoring Program – An Opportunity of a Lifetime
By: Ma. Ziara Janelle Bajar
For any college student, finding an internship can be one of the most challenging phases that they will have to face, but that’s only half of the battle.
First, it takes a lot of time and courage to undergo each interview process before finding an internship that can offer a well-rounded experience. More importantly, the on-the-job training itself is a deep dive into what the corporate world feels like, and it can be astonishing and overwhelming.
But spending my internship at the frontrunner in digital banking and tech in the Philippines changed a lot of my old notions about internship and boosted my confidence in owning the future.
Here are five reasons why UnionBank’s Student Mentoring Program (SMP) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
INNOVATION IS EVERYWHERE
UnionBank sees interns as innovators who can bring fresh ideas and valuable contributions to the organization.
More than just the day-to-day life of being a UnionBanker, they are immersed in real and live projects of the Bank that are high-impact, collaborative, and relevant to their field of experience.
The interns are also exposed to how their teams work with their clients, partners, and stakeholders, giving the student innovators a preview of how it feels to work in UnionBank.
GROWTH IS CONSTANT AND SUPPORTED
At UnionBank, the SMP mentors are assigned to each student innovator to help them hack their own growth through business unit immersion
Aside from guiding the interns in their tasks and performance evaluation, SMP mentors have embraced an open culture to share their own career stories and wisdom while working for the best digital bank.
On top of the unit immersion, the program offers FREE learning sessions and capability-building programs that aim to future-proof interns in the digital era. The sessions are led by the subject matter experts who can share the industry’s best practices.
FAIL FAST AND LEARN FAST
To introduce how UnionBank co-creates innovations for a better world, one of the SMP’s major activities is the Ideathon.
The Ideathon allows the interns to design ideas and turn them into viable products that are aligned with UnionBank’s mission: to embed the digital ways of banking.
The Ideathon enables student innovators to see their ideas come to life. They’ll also receive invaluable feedback from seasoned product owners in the Bank, who will guide them towards the full realization of their products in a one-day pitching session.
PURPOSE-DRIVEN PASSION
UnionBank’s work is centered around the Filipino people, and SMP provides a platform for interns to practice their own advocacies through UnionBank’s corporate social responsibility and sustainability program, GoBeyond Communities (GBC).
Interns can propose their own advocacy projects as a team or participate in ongoing programs to make their experience more meaningful.
BUILDING A LASTING RELATIONSHIP
The connections made by student innovators with their co-interns, mentors, and teammates can be valuable in career building. Interns are considered UnionBankers during their internship and are also given the possibility of becoming a permanent part of the team through SMP.
The SMP provides a jam-packed experience for interns, but it’s the integration of UnionBank’s core values- Integrity, Magis, and Ubuntu- that makes it a holistic and fulfilling experience. Join UnionBank as a student innovator and gain a learning experience that will last a lifetime!
