SELYADO 5.0: Fostering a Privacy-Enabled Secure Ecosystem

Pasig City, Philippines – UnionBank’s SELYADO, the annual event focused on data privacy and security, successfully concluded its 5th edition with great enthusiasm and participation.  

 

The event, aimed to raise awareness and promote a privacy-enabled secure ecosystem for UnionBankers and their families. 

The speakers delivered insightful talks, addressing critical aspects of data privacy and security. The National Privacy Commission’s (NPC) Deputy Commissioner Atty. Leandro Angelo Aguirre, the first speaker, emphasized the significance of safeguarding personal data, particularly for the younger generation. He shed light on the potential risks posed by online quizzes and surveys designed to extract sensitive information. Atty. Aguirre emphasized the role of parents as the “frontline defenders and encouraged them to be vigilant, read terms and conditions, and monitor their children’s online activities. 

The second speaker, Atty. John Fajardo, from Fajardo law offices, presented a new perspective on privacy, by introducingPrivaSEA” as he explained, Privacy is like the open sea. The implications are vast, and you can easily drown in it, that’s why you need to learn how to navigate through it effectively. He shared information about data subject rights, discussing familiar topics such as website cookies and the importance of maintaining control over personal data. Atty. Fajardo emphasized the need for responsible online behavior and urged attendees to approach terms and conditions with a sense of responsibility, thereby empowering themselves and making informed choices.

Mircosoft’s Senior Security Specialist, Abigail Roces took the stage as the third speaker, sharing valuable insights on the current state of internet users and highlighting the various online threats targeting children. She highlighted the importance of vigilance and the need for proactive measures to protect children and their personal data. Roces provided practical tips and best practices to enhance data privacy and security for families, including teaching children to be cautious when encountering suspicious emails, links, or files from unknown sources. “We need to be vigilant, there’s no room for complacency in today’s world. Criminals know that children are ‘easy prey.’ The internet offers several opportunities, but it also poses several risks that us, guardians and parents must address” We have to take the necessary steps to protect our children and their personal data.” Roces said.

One of the highlights of SELYADO 5.0 was the exciting prizes awarded to those who actively engage in the discussions. Both virtual and live attendees, including those from UnionBank Plaza’s 39th floor had the opportunity to win books about data privacy, arcade game cards, and amusement park tickets. 

 

The event concluded with an engaging question and answer session, where UnionBankers had the opportunity to interact with the data privacy and cyber security experts.

This segment allowed for further exploration of the topics discussed and provided attendees with valuable insights to implement in their personal and professional lives. 

 

SELYADO 5.0 showcased the commitment of industry professionals from the NPC, Microsoft and UnionBank in fostering a privacy-enabled secure ecosystem.  
 
By raising awareness, empowering individuals, and emphasizing the importance of responsible online behavior, the event contributed to building a safer digital environment for everyone.
