UnionBank Volunteers Provide Support to Tuberculosis Patients Through “END TB NOW NA” Initiative

By: Martina Lucero

Last May 25, 2024, a GoBeyond Communities initiative titled “End TB Now Na!” took place at the Apopong Rural Health Unit TB DOTS Center. This community-focused endeavor aimed to combat tuberculosis (TB) and support affected individuals through tangible donations and facility enhancements.

The initiative primarily focused on TB patients receiving treatment at the Apopong Rural Health Unit TB DOTS Center. This decision was driven by the disease’s ongoing health impact in communities, emphasizing the importance of supporting patients during treatment to ensure their well-being and prevent further spread. Barangay Apopong and Barangay Sinawal also have a population of around 80,000, which makes addressing TB in these areas even more critical.

The initiative had two main components: hygiene kits and technological upgrades. Hygiene kits, which included soap, alcohol, face masks, and other essentials, were distributed to 50 TB patients. The aim was to encourage good hygiene practices, crucial for managing TB and preventing its spread.

The health unit was also provided with two brand new desktop computers and two printers. These resources could greatly enhance the center’s capacity to manage patient records, conduct research, and improve communication. This upgrade also aims to enhance the quality of care provided to the community.

The event featured a short program to mark the donation and turnover ceremony. This included speeches from organizers, representatives from the health center, and community leaders. They emphasized the importance of TB awareness and treatment, and expressed gratitude for the support received.

The patients also reacted positively to the initiative, appreciating the support and how the donations would greatly help in their fight against TB. One patient mentioned, “The hygiene kits are a lifesaver, and the new computers will help the health center provide even better care.”

A total of nine UnionBankers participated in this initiative, representing the MSME, BCM, and RBC teams.

The “End TB Now Na!” initiative is proof that community-driven efforts can help overcome health challenges. Through collaboration, dedication, and strategic support, significant strides can be made in improving public health and enhancing the lives of those affected by diseases.

Through the GoBeyond Communities program, UnionBank has once again shown its commitment to social responsibility and extended its impact beyond financial services.
